Termite Swarmers
Winged termites are a warning sign of an established colony near your home.
Termite swarmers (also called alates) are winged reproductive termites that emerge from mature colonies to establish new ones. If you see swarmers in or around your home, it means there is an established termite colony nearby — possibly inside your walls.
What Are Termite Swarmers? #
Swarmers are the reproductive caste of the termite colony. When a colony reaches maturity (usually after 3-5 years), it produces swarmers that fly out to mate and start new colonies. Swarming typically occurs in the spring in San Antonio, often after rain.
Swarmers vs. Flying Ants #
- Termite swarmers have straight antennae; ants have bent antennae
- Termite swarmers have equal-length wings; ants have longer front wings
- Termite swarmers have a broad waist; ants have a pinched waist
- Termite wings fall off easily; ant wings stay attached
